BirthThomas Lubanga Dyilo, who founded the Union of Congolese Patriots and led its militia in Ituri, was born. In March 2012 he became the first person convicted by the International Criminal Court, found guilty of conscripting and enlisting children under fifteen and using them in hostilities, and was sentenced that July to 14 years.

PoliticsM. I. Okpara, premier of the Eastern Region, told President Nnamdi Azikiwe that the opposition United Progressive Grand Alliance would boycott the next day's federal election because it would not be free and fair. Azikiwe called the boycott a tactical error with no legal effect on the results; Okpara said it would have a political one. The same day the Action Group, the alliance's western partner, said it would "stand by our decision to boycott the poll."
