The UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 1761, condemning apartheid in South Africa and calling on member states to end economic and military ties with Pretoria.

Anti-apartheid activists Vuyisile Mini, Wilson Khayinga, and Zinakile Mkaba, the first Umkhonto we Sizwe members sentenced to death, were hanged in Pretoria despite international appeals for clemency.
