Crowds attacked Jews in Oujda and the mining town of Jerada in eastern Morocco, weeks after the founding of Israel and in a border town used to move Moroccan Jews toward Algeria. Forty-four people were killed, five at Oujda and thirty-nine at Jerada, and about sixty were wounded. The killings drove a wave of Jewish emigration from Morocco.
