Michel-georges bernard — CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons 1993 Tahar Djaout, novelist and editor of the weekly Ruptures, died of wounds he received when gunmen shot him outside his home near Algiers on 26 May. He had founded the paper that January and used it against Islamist fundamentalism. One of his attackers said afterwards that Djaout wielded a pen that could work on Islamic circles. His killing opened three years of assassinations of Algerian journalists and intellectuals.

Public Domain, Wikimedia Commons 2012 Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolution that ended his 30-year rule.
