Michel-georges bernard, CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons 1993 Tahar Djaout, novelist and editor of the weekly Ruptures, died of wounds he received when gunmen shot him outside his home near Algiers on 26 May. He had founded the paper that January and used it against Islamist fundamentalism. One of his attackers said afterwards that Djaout wielded a pen that could work on Islamic circles. His killing opened three years of assassinations of Algerian journalists and intellectuals.
