BirthMore than 12,000 people marched in Monrovia against a proposal by the agriculture minister, Florence Chenoweth, to raise the price of imported rice from $22 to $26 a hundredweight. Soldiers and police fired on the crowd, and about 500 people were wounded. Counts of the dead run from dozens to more than 70, and a Liberian history archive puts them in the hundreds. The shooting started the unravelling of William Tolbert's government, which fell to a coup the following April.
