Public Domain, Wikimedia Commons 1930 Al-Shabaab gunmen attacked Garissa University College before dawn and held the campus into the night, killing 148 students and staff and wounding about 80. Al-Shabaab said it had spared Muslims. Survivors disputed that, and one of the guards killed was a Muslim. Three men were convicted over the attack in 2019, one jailed for life and two for 41 years.
