Former Congolese Prime Minister Evariste Kimba and several other politicians were publicly executed in Kinshasa on the orders of President Joseph Mobutu.

The East Indiaman Arniston was wrecked in a storm off Waenhuiskrans near Cape Agulhas in present-day South Africa, killing 372 people.
