The Dogon and Sirius B: A 'Lost Ancient Knowledge' Story That Later Fieldwork Couldn't Confirm

Sirius B is a white dwarf star orbiting Sirius, the brightest star in Earth’s night sky, invisible to the naked eye and confirmed by astronomers only in 1862, when its gravitational pull on Sirius A was detected through a telescope powerful enough to resolve the pair. For decades, one of the most widely repeated claims in popular alternative history has held that the Dogon people of central Mali possessed detailed knowledge of Sirius B’s existence, orbit, and even density, centuries or millennia before Western astronomy caught up, evidence some writers have used to argue for ancient extraterrestrial contact or a lost tradition of advanced astronomical observation.
The claim traces almost entirely to one source: French anthropologist Marcel Griaule, who conducted extensive fieldwork among the Dogon starting in the 1930s and published detailed accounts of Dogon cosmology, most influentially a 1965 book built around weeks of conversation with a single elderly, blind informant named Ogotemmêli. Griaule’s material described a Dogon cosmological tradition involving a star called “po tolo,” said to be small, extremely dense, and orbiting Sirius, details that struck later readers as an uncanny match for Sirius B’s actual astrophysical properties. The claim gained its widest popular audience through Robert Temple’s 1976 book The Sirius Mystery, which built an argument for ancient extraterrestrial contact directly on top of Griaule’s ethnographic material.
The strongest scholarly challenge came from a source with direct standing to make it: Walter van Beek, an anthropologist who conducted his own extensive fieldwork among the Dogon starting in 1979 and published a major restudy in the journal Current Anthropology in 1991, co-authored with several other researchers. Van Beek’s fieldwork couldn’t replicate Griaule’s central findings. Dogon informants outside Griaule’s original circle had never heard of “po tolo” as a companion to Sirius, and even among people connected to Griaule’s original informants, no one Van Beek spoke with unambiguously identified the star in question as Sirius at all, let alone described it as a dense invisible companion star. Van Beek’s proposed explanation, sometimes called the “Griaule contamination” hypothesis, is that Griaule’s own detailed, leading questioning style, combined with a Dogon cultural norm against directly contradicting an outside questioner, likely shaped the specific answers Ogotemmêli gave, producing a cosmology that reflected a collaborative construction between anthropologist and informant more than a preexisting, widely shared Dogon tradition.
The episode has become something of a case study in anthropology methods courses, illustrating how a single influential ethnographer’s fieldwork, however sincere, can produce claims that later, broader research is unable to independently confirm. It doesn’t mean Dogon cosmology lacks sophisticated astronomical or cosmological content; Griaule and later researchers documented an intricate, symbolically rich Dogon worldview regardless of the Sirius B question specifically. What the Sirius B claim illustrates is narrower and more cautionary: a striking, specific factual match between a described tradition and a real astronomical discovery turned out, on closer independent examination, not to hold up as evidence of ancient knowledge at all.
