'Mitochondrial Eve': The 1987 Study That Traced Every Living Person to One African Woman

In 1987, geneticists Rebecca Cann, Mark Stoneking, and their supervisor Allan Wilson, working at the University of California, Berkeley, published a paper in Nature that would reshape how scientists understood modern human origins. Rather than studying fossils or artifacts, the team compared mitochondrial DNA, genetic material passed down exclusively through the maternal line, from 147 people drawn from five broad geographic populations, using it to reconstruct a family tree tracing how all those samples related to one another.

The finding that emerged was striking in its simplicity: every mitochondrial lineage in the sample, and by extension every living person’s maternal line, could be traced back to a single common ancestor who lived an estimated 200,000 years ago, with the deepest branches of the resulting family tree rooted specifically in African populations. The paper itself never used the phrase “Mitochondrial Eve.” That nickname came from a separate commentary piece published in the same issue of Nature, a catchy shorthand that stuck in public discussion far more durably than the study’s own more technical language, and one that also invited a common misreading: that a single woman was somehow the “first” or only woman alive at that time, when the actual finding concerns which maternal lineages happen to have survived unbroken to the present, not how many women existed 200,000 years ago.

The 1987 study became one of the foundational pieces of genetic evidence supporting what’s known as the “Recent African Origin” or “Out of Africa” model, the now well-supported scientific consensus that modern Homo sapiens evolved in Africa and later spread outward to populate the rest of the world, rather than evolving in parallel across multiple continents as some earlier anthropological models had proposed. Combined with fossil evidence from sites including Ethiopia’s Omo and Herto remains, the genetic case Cann’s team built has held up remarkably well across nearly four decades of subsequent research using far more sophisticated sequencing technology than was available in 1987.

What the original paper didn’t do, and what popular retellings sometimes add on their own, is name a specific country as Mitochondrial Eve’s homeland. The 1987 study’s African rooting was based on broad population sampling and pointed to the continent generally, not to Tanzania or any other single nation specifically, a level of geographic precision the underlying genetic data from that era simply couldn’t support. Later research using denser sampling across African populations has continued refining where in Africa human genetic diversity is deepest, but the original, historically significant 1987 finding remains, in its own terms, a continental one rather than a national one.
