No, Europeans and Africans Did Not Share Identical DNA Until 6000 BC
A claim that circulates widely online holds that European and African populations shared identical DNA until roughly 6000 BC, when the two groups suddenly diverged, often paired with a National Geographic link as its evidence. The claim traces to a real 2013 National Geographic article, “Modern Europe’s Genetic History Starts in Stone Age,” but the study it describes measured something else entirely, and the popularized version garbles both its subject and its conclusion.
The research behind that article, conducted at the University of Adelaide’s Australian Centre for Ancient DNA, analyzed ancient skeletal remains found within Europe to trace how the continent’s own population makeup changed over time. It found that early European hunter-gatherers carried a genetic signature, marked by the U mitochondrial haplogroup, that was largely displaced starting around 7,500 years ago by incoming Neolithic farmers migrating from the Middle East, who carried a different marker, the H haplogroup, along with the knowledge of agriculture. By roughly 4500 BC, about 6,500 years ago, that admixture between hunter-gatherers and farmer migrants had settled into something resembling modern Europe’s genetic makeup. That is a study of population replacement and mixing within Europe. It says nothing about when European and African lineages diverged from each other, because comparing those two things was never the study’s subject.
The actual scientific picture of how African and non-African populations relate to each other is both older and more complicated than any single date. Anatomically modern humans now appear in the fossil record as far back as roughly 300,000 years ago, based on remains found at Jebel Irhoud in Morocco, evidence that has shifted the field toward a “pan-African” origin for our species rather than a strictly East African one, and population-genetic estimates for when ancestors of non-African populations began leaving the continent generally cluster between 50,000 and 70,000 years ago, with some genomic evidence pointing to earlier, smaller dispersals extending back further still. Geneticist David Reich, whose 2018 book “Who We Are and How We Got Here” synthesizes the ancient-DNA field he helped pioneer, describes that departure not as a clean split but as a prolonged, uneven process of small founding populations moving outward from a much larger and more genetically diverse African source population, with additional migration and mixing continuing for tens of thousands of years afterward.
That last point cuts against the popularized claim in a different way. Sub-Saharan Africa today holds substantially more human genetic diversity than the rest of the world’s populations combined, a consequence of modern humans having lived and diversified there for far longer than anywhere else our species has settled. Framing Europeans as Africans’ single “closest genetic relatives,” as the claim also does, misstates how population genetics actually works: every non-African population descends from African ancestors, and genetic relatedness among human groups is a matter of shared ancestry and degree, not a simple ranked list of closest and most distant relatives. The real science here, prolonged African origins and diversity rather than a clean 6000 BC split, tells a more accurate and, if anything, more striking story than the version that keeps getting shared.
