The Death of Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza

Pierre Nkurunziza, Burundi’s president since 2005, died on June 8, 2020, at Karusi Hospital in the country’s east, at age 55. The government’s official account said Nkurunziza first felt unwell after attending a volleyball match, appeared to be recovering over the following days, then took a sudden turn for the worse before his heart stopped; medical staff spent several hours attempting to revive him without success. Burundi’s government announced the death the next day, June 9, attributing it to cardiac arrest brought on by heart failure.

Nkurunziza’s death came at a politically fraught moment. Just weeks earlier, on May 20, 2020, Burundi had held a presidential election that produced a declared victory for Evariste Ndayishimiye, Nkurunziza’s chosen successor within the ruling CNDD-FDD party; Nkurunziza was not a candidate in that race, having already announced he would step aside after the controversial third term he won in 2015, a bid his opponents said violated Burundi’s constitutional two-term limit. His sudden death, arriving before he had formally handed over power, meant Ndayishimiye’s inauguration was moved up: Burundi’s Constitutional Court swore him in on June 18, 2020, ten days after Nkurunziza’s death and well ahead of the transfer’s originally planned schedule.

The official heart-failure account did not stop unconfirmed rumors from circulating that Nkurunziza’s death was linked to Covid-19, speculation fueled partly by reports that his wife had been hospitalized in Nairobi around the same period for an unspecified condition and by Burundi’s own conspicuously minimal public health response to the pandemic at the time, including large campaign rallies held in the run-up to the election despite warnings from health officials. Burundi’s government never confirmed any Covid-19 connection to the president’s death, and no independent verification of that rumor has been documented; the cardiac-arrest cause remains the only officially stated explanation.

Nkurunziza’s fifteen years in power had been marked by his 2015 bid for a third term, a move his opponents argued violated constitutional term limits and that triggered a failed coup attempt and a wave of political violence that killed an estimated 1,700 civilians and drove roughly 390,000 Burundians into exile in the years that followed. His death closed out one of the more turbulent presidencies in the Great Lakes region during that period, handing power to a successor who inherited both the office and the unresolved political tensions Nkurunziza’s rule had left behind.
