Mansa Musa: How Rich Was History's Wealthiest Man?

Mansa Musa I ruled the Mali Empire from roughly 1312 to 1337, presiding over a state that at its height stretched across territory now covered by Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, and the Gambia, an area of well over a million square kilometers. His empire absorbed the great trading cities of Timbuktu and Gao, and its wealth rested on a simple but immensely lucrative arrangement: Mali controlled both ends of the trans-Saharan trade in gold from the goldfields of Bambuk and Bure and salt mined further north, taxing the caravans that carried both across the desert. Historians estimate that West Africa supplied close to half of the gold circulating in the Old World during this period, and Mali sat directly on top of the supply.

Musa became famous across the medieval world not for ruling this system but for one journey through it. In 1324, he set out on the hajj to Mecca, a pilgrimage of roughly 2,700 miles that took him through Cairo. Arabic chroniclers described an entourage that ran into the tens of thousands, accompanied by dozens of camels loaded with gold. Musa’s gift-giving in Cairo was reportedly so extravagant that it flooded the local market with gold and depressed its value there for years afterward, a detail that appears in multiple contemporary Arabic accounts and is the single best-documented piece of evidence for the scale of his wealth. He spent roughly three months in Egypt before continuing on to Mecca and Medina, and the journey turned Mali, until then a name known mainly to North African traders, into a kingdom cartographers in Europe felt compelled to draw. A famous 1375 map known as the Catalan Atlas depicts Musa enthroned and holding a gold nugget, one of the earliest European visual records of a sub-Saharan African ruler.

The claim that Musa was the richest person who ever lived took off in the 2010s, popularized by outlets ranking him above modern billionaires with net worth figures in the hundreds of billions of dollars, sometimes as high as $400 billion in inflation-adjusted terms. Those numbers make for a striking comparison, but historians who specialize in the period, including Mali scholar Hadrien Collet, caution that they are not really calculations in any rigorous sense. Fourteenth-century Mali did not operate anything resembling a modern economy with liquid, tradable assets that convert cleanly into today’s dollars, and the original sources were writing to convey astonishment at Musa’s generosity rather than to produce an audit of his treasury. What can be said with more confidence is comparative: gold from Mali under Musa’s control represented a meaningful share of an entire continent’s gold supply at a time when gold was the era’s ultimate reserve of value, which is a form of wealth concentration that has few, if any, real historical parallels.

Whether or not a specific dollar figure holds up to scrutiny, the underlying claim, that Mansa Musa presided over one of the largest concentrations of wealth any single ruler has ever controlled, is not seriously disputed. What separates him from other fabulously wealthy historical figures is that his wealth was witnessed, recorded, and remembered by outside observers across an entire trade network stretching from West Africa to Cairo to the Arabian Peninsula, leaving behind a paper trail that few pre-modern fortunes can match.
