Lord Frederick Lugard, colonial Governor of Uganda and Nigeria, wrote this about Syrians (and Lebanese) in his 1922 book. They migrate to West Africa as street hawkers/peddlers, refuse to marry natives and with time tactically position themselves to gain affluence over natives.
