Dahomey, one of the last kingdoms to be conquered by the Europeans was heavily dreaded and had a no-nonsense King called Ahosu Ghezo the Great, who repeatedly dealt with them. He married 18,000 wives! Even the Brits (who later had neighbouring Lagos) couldn't conquer it. 1852
