The Namib: Where the Atlantic Meets the World's Oldest Desert
The Namib Desert runs like a narrow ribbon along Namibia’s Atlantic coastline, stretching roughly 1,200 to 2,000 kilometers from the Orange River in the south, past the Skeleton Coast, into southern Angola, and reaching up to 200 kilometers inland at its widest. It is the feature that gave Namibia its name: “Namib” comes from the Nama language and is generally translated as “vast place,” a fitting description for a desert whose dune fields and gravel plains dominate the entire western edge of the country. Geologists consider it, alongside the Atacama in Chile, one of the two oldest deserts on the planet. Estimates place its arid or semi-arid conditions at somewhere between 55 and 80 million years old, meaning the Namib was already a desert while dinosaurs still walked parts of the Earth, a claim other contenders for “world’s oldest desert” cannot match.
What makes the Namib especially unusual among deserts is not just its age but its climate mechanism. Rather than being shaped primarily by heat and distance from moisture-bearing winds, the Namib is a coastal desert cooled by the Benguela Current, a cold ocean current running north along the Atlantic coast. That cold water chills the air above it, and when the resulting fog rolls inland at night, it becomes the primary source of moisture for much of the ecosystem, since rainfall in parts of the desert can be less than 10 millimeters a year. Plants and animals have adapted specifically to harvest that fog: the welwitschia, a strange, low-growing plant that can live well over a thousand years and is found almost nowhere else on Earth, draws in moisture through its leaves, while beetles in the genus Stenocara tilt their bodies to let fog condense and roll down into their mouths.
The desert’s most photographed feature is Sossusvlei, a clay pan surrounded by star-shaped dunes that rank among the tallest in the world, some exceeding 300 meters. Nearby, the white clay pan known as Deadvlei holds the blackened, centuries-old skeletons of camel thorn trees, preserved by the extreme dryness after the river that once fed them changed course roughly 600 to 900 years ago. Further north along the coast, the aptly named Skeleton Coast is littered with shipwrecks driven ashore by fog, rough seas, and a shoreline sailors historically found nearly impossible to navigate. Despite its harshness, the Namib supports desert-adapted elephants and black rhinos that have learned to travel long distances between scattered water sources, along with oryx, springbok, and other species uniquely suited to one of the driest and, by any reasonable measure, oldest landscapes on the planet. Much of the desert now falls within the Namib-Naukluft National Park and the broader Namib Sand Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized in 2013 for its unbroken record of shifting dune formation stretching back tens of millions of years.
